SUMMER SEMINARS IN LINGUISTICS (SSL)
Seminar 1: Reanalyzing English Grammar and Training in Error Density Index (EDI) Analysis
Schedule: Tuesday-Friday; 9a-12n, 1p-4p
Date: 14-17 May 2019
Venue: Palma Hall, University of the Philippines Diliman
Description:
This seminar focuses on various grammatical constituents and rules of International English, reanalyzed based on modern linguistic theories. Using the problem-based learning strategy, the seminar leads the participants through several English constructions that often puzzle English teachers and learners alike such as:
- If I will survive is in the simple future tense, what is the tense of I would survive?
- Is it is or are in the sentence If there _____ more than one hypothesis, choose the simpler?
- Is the Labor Party’s campaign slogan Who can you trust to lead the nation grammatically wrong?
- Is it unite or united in the sentence It’s about time we _____?
- Should the sentence You will pass this test if you _____ be completed with the phrase will study hard, or simply study hard?
- In the question Would you like to be her?, is the pronoun her the object of the verb be? Can be have an object?
These and many more materials culled from international media are puzzling to those depending on the traditional grammar in most English language textbooks. Modern grammar easily and clearly explains these.
Modern grammar is also applied to Error Density Index (EDI) analysis, an English language teaching strategy presented at the 13th Philippine Linguistics Congress in November 2018. This seminar trains the participants in using EDI analysis of learners’ written outputs to produce statistics that can be used for the evaluation of the proficiency of the learners’ foreign language strategy in expression, and the learners’ progress in cleaning up their outputs. The participants will also be trained in using EDI analysis for research into systematic errors in Philippine media to generate materials that can be used for alerting the learners to such errors they are exposed to.
Ultimately, the goal of this seminar is to train the participants towards becoming good proofreaders, able to provide accurate, timely, and comprehensive feedback to their students.
Seminar 2: Critical Reading and Writing
Schedule: Tuesday-Friday; 9a-12n, 1p-4p
Date: 14-17 May 2019
Venue: Palma Hall, University of the Philippines Diliman
Description:
This seminar introduces the participants to the evaluation phase which is common to both process writing and process reading. It is the locus of critical reading and writing, where texts and speeches are subjected to evaluation for rhetoric, discourse, assertions, and argument. The seminar uses materials from local and international media, as well as pieces of written communication from government institutions and multinationals. Rhetoric targets qualities associated with sociolinguistic congruence and language aesthetics, including figures of speech. Discourse targets the qualities of unity, integrity, and cohesiveness, and various modes of development. Assertions target meaningfulness, verifiability, and factual fit. Argument targets logical relations, modes of reasoning, and fallacies. Also employing the problem-based learning strategy, this seminar uses a series of exercises to drill the participants in the various modes of evaluation.
Ultimately, the goal of this seminar is to train the participants towards becoming good copy editors, referees, and critics, able to train their students in professional communication.
