Sr. Lecturer Sydney Bata and BA Lingg Alum John Oliver Monghit are at the 12th International Conference of the International Society for the Study of Chinese Overseas (ISSCO). BA Lingg Alum Monghit presented his study on “The Sinitic Languages in the Philippines: History, Contact, and Status” while Sr. Lecturer Bata presents his study “Culinary Love in Sociopolitical Fault Lines: Filipino Perspectives on Chinese Cuisine and People.” The conference is held from 4-6 November 2025 at the University Malaya in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. This year, the conference has the theme “Chinese Overseas in a Changing World: Global Networks, Local Realities.”

This year’s ISSCO conference features studies that explore the interplay between global networks and local relaties and that examine how Chinese overseas communities navigate and have navigated their transnational connections while adapting to their host societies. The ISSCO is the organization dedicated to the study of Chinese overseas with the goal of advancing research and scholarly exchange within this particular area of study.
