Assoc. Prof. Maria Kristina S. Gallego went to Babuyan Claro for fieldwork last 08 to 28 April 2026 as part of her collaboration with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) for the project “Documentation of Narratives on Toponyms, Hazards and Disasters (DALAN).” The project aims to determine and document oral history in Babuyan Claro relating to volcano, earthquake, and other natural hazardous events, and to relate these descriptions with published reports and observed local geology. In addition, the project aims to document local words and phrases that are used to describe natural hazards, which will potentially be helpful in developing local language information materials for disaster awareness and preparedness. Along with Project DALAN, PHIVOLCS also conducted fieldwork on Babuyan Claro for the project “Volcano-Hydrothermal System Models of the Philippine Volcanoes: Tracking Fluids and Related Hazards in Cagua and Hibok-hibok Volcanoes, Philippines (VOTE-VHS),” which involved the gathering of water and rock samples in order to describe the hydrothermal and volcanic systems in the area.
