UP Lingg at Damá Conference 

Several of the Department’s faculty members and students are set to present their works at the Damá Emotion Research Group 1st National Conference: “Filipino Feels: Centering Emotions in Philippine Culture and Society” from 04 to 05 September at the University of the Philippines Diliman. The event “brings together scholars examining the words, histories, politics, spaces, and relationships through which emotion becomes meaningful in the Philippines.”

Assoc. Prof. Tuting Hernandez will give his keynote talk, “Sensing, Feeling, Remembering: The Linguistics of Emotions in the Philippines,” with an introduction by Assoc. Prof. Maria Kristina Gallego. Department-affiliated researchers meanwhile have a total of seven paper presentations spread across the two days of the conference:

• “What does it mean to feel bad in Filipino” by Lect. Michael Manahan
• “Through small bursts of emotion: Explicating Cebuano monosyllabic emotive interjections in interaction using Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM)” by Instr. Brian Baran
• “‘Selos yarn’: The concept of ‘selos’ in Tagalog” by Asst. Prof. Divine Angeli Endriga
• “Diksyunaryo ng mga emosyon: Conceptualizing a monolingual dictionary of emotions in Filipino” by TA Patricia Asuncion and Instr. JM De Pano
• “Labis na hinagpis ng pamilya: A Natural Semantic Metalanguage analysis of hinagpis” by BA Lingg alum Carmela Rosales
• “Patterns of passions: EMOTION verbs in Philippine languages” by Instr. JM De Pano
• “SHAME in Tagalog, Cebuano/Binisaya, and Ilokano” by Asst. Prof. Ria Rafael, Instr. Brian Baran, and Instr. JM De Pano

Lect. Michael Manahan is also part of the conference committee as its publicity head. The event is co-organized by the Damá Emotion Research Group, the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy, the UP Diliman Departamento ng Kasaysayan, and the UP Department of Linguistics.
