ABSTRACT
The Linguistics 290 class of Assoc. Prof. Aldrin P. Lee, PhD (Department of Linguistics, UP Diliman) is inviting everyone to a webinar on Current Trends in Linguistics, featuring the lectures of Arran Stibbe, PhD (University of Gloucestershire) on Ecolinguistics and Maria Kristina S. Gallego, PhD (University of the Philippines Diliman) on Language Contact.
Linguistics as a field of inquiry is continuously shaped by the dynamics of the academe and the research path driven by the demands of human society. Both theoretical and applied linguistics have changed significantly in the past century and are expected to encounter more divergence (or convergence) in the next decades. The graduate course Linguistics 290 seeks to identify and understand the motivation behind the “current trends” that have recently emerged in linguistics as a discipline around the world and to reflect about how such developments could be relevant to the Philippine context.
