Tune in this Friday for the two new installments of Linguistics Special Lecture Series (LSLS), featuring two scholars of linguistics and language studies in India, in celebration of the centennial anniversary of the UP Department of Linguistics, home to the scientific study of Philippine languages and the development of the teaching of national languages of Asia.

 

The first lecture titled, “Indian Linguistic Diversity: A Brief Outline” will be presented by Dr. Anil Thakur of the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi. The next lecture titled, “Cross-cultural study of verbal and visual metaphors in the advertisements,” will be delivered by Dr. Sanjukta Ghosh of the same institution.

“Indian Linguistic Diversity: A Brief Outline”

ABSTRACT

India is well-known to represent unity in diversity across all levels including linguistic. Linguistic diversity exists at multiple levels, and at the same time, the idea of India (South Asia) as a linguistic area is also well argued and accepted. This co-existence of linguistic unity and diversity has been an important topic of socio-political deliberation and of academic researchon the Indian languages. The Indian linguistic research from core linguistics and grammar to socio-and ethno-linguistics has been significantly contributingto the framing of the national language policies (and corrections thereof) and has provided effective inputs for empowerment and revitalization of various speech communities and their social and national integration and harmony. To a great extent, the Indian linguistic scenario is also the global reality and the equivalent case of the Philippines is not much different. In this talk. I propose to present a brief outline of the present Indian linguistic scenario with an aim to familiarize the young linguistic researchers and students (in the intended audience). The broader objective is to explore and outline some areas for potential academic collaborations and engagement where the research questions and insights are mutually feeding. I will conclude with a particular focus on an emerging, engaging and impactful area of research in linguistic landscaping (with examples of signages, commercial advertisements, etc. in the public spaces in the Indian city of Varanasi).

 

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Anil Thakur, an associate professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi, has training, teaching and research experience in generative syntax, comparative linguistic analysis and resource creation.

“Cross-cultural study of verbal and visual metaphors in the advertisements”

ABSTRACT

In the global world multinational companies are making advertisements in different languages targeting different countries and cultural groups. The same products when launched in different countries often use different persuasive and affective strategies through verbal and visual language. Metaphors, both verbal and visual, are found to be a useful tool for persuasion. This talk will focus to do a comparative study of the selected television advertisements of multinational brands when they are launched in English for English speaking audience and their counterparts in Hindi made for Indian television commercials. The objective of the work is to find out how metaphors change the narrative of the advertising cross-culturally. We also want to find out the role of the culture in metaphor creation

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr Sanjukta Ghosh is an associate professor in the Department of Humanistic Studies, Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi. Her major research areas are cognitive linguistics, lexical semantics, Pragmatics, syntax-pragmatics interface studies and lexical knowledge representation in Generative Lexicon for NLP.
