The Essentials of Language Documentation in the Philippines | CSSP Extrams

As part of the CSSP Extramural Training Seminar for Social Science Teachers, the UP Department of Linguistics is organizing the one-and-a-half-day workshop, “The Essentials of Language Documentation in the Philippines.” The facilitators are Inst. JM De Pano, Assoc. Prof. Kristina Gallego, Asst. Prof. Fellow Kritsana Canilao, and Asst. Prof. Noah Cruz.
This workshop equips those interested in the scientific study of language with the necessary workflows, skills, and concepts needed in language documentation in the Philippines. To achieve this goal, the workshop (i) introduces participants to the scientific study of language and how concepts within it reflect the linguistic situation of the country, (ii) orients them on the importance of proper methodologies in the documentation of lesser-studied indigenous Philippine languages, (iii) emphasizes the part of the community in designing methodologies and choosing points of inquiry, (iv) presents the different elicitation materials and methods, including their strengths and weaknesses, (v) highlights the roles of archiving and community involvement in ensuring the continuity of language documentation, (vi) integrates the current perception to language documentation with the information made available by language vitality assessments, and (vii) discusses the roles of the native speaker, the community, and the linguist in language documentation in the Philippines.
