Assoc. Prof. Maria Kristina Gallego and Asst. Prof. Elsie Marie Or presented their paper on “Reflections from the repatriation of Bugkalot/Eg̓ongot legacy language materials” at the Philippine Studies Conference 2025 with the theme “Repatriating Philippine heritage” held at the SOAS University of London in the UK from 19 to 21 September 2025. The paper is co-authored with Mr. Franklin Barcelo and Mr. Frederick Barcelo from the Bugkalot/Eg̓ongot community and Instr. John Michael Vincent de Pano and Asst. Prof. Ria Rafael from the Department. The paper is a part of the ongoing collaboration with the Bugkalot/Eg̓ongot community. Asst. Prof. Ian Christopher Alfonso from the UP Department of History also presented his paper entitled “The History Retrieval Project of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines” at the conference.

The conference aims to explore the material return, digital reunification, and recontextualization of Philippine artefacts, manuscripts, and sound heritage kept in institutions outside of the Philippines. These also include objects that have been made in the Philippine archipelago of all time contexts, as well as objects that are related to the Philippines either through consumption, war, trade, and exchange, as well as aesthetic, domestic, or ritual use.
