Department Chair Kristina Gallego and Assoc. Prof. Mary Ann Gaitan-Bacolod are guest speakers at the “Exploring Tagalog linguistics: Introduction to research on a Philippine language” online lecture series organized by the University of Zurich and the De La Salle University (DLSU)

Gallego’s talk, “The multilingual landscape of Babuyan Claro,” will focus on the dynamics of the different languages spoken in and near the island in the northern Philippines, and will also discuss how Tagalog is becoming a part of the linguistic landscape of the community. It will be held on 28 October at 7:15 PM (PHT). 

Bacolod, meanwhile, will present on the translatability of Tagalog modals. She has published a similar work in her co-edited book, “Translation Studies in the Philippines: Navigating a Multilingual Archipelago” released early this year. In it, she also explores the impact of the translatability of Filipino modals on disaster communication. Her talk is on 02 December, 7:15 PM (PHT). 

They will also be joined by BA Lingg alum Daniel Kaufman and MA Lingg alum Ivan Bondoc, along with other scholars focusing on Tagalog as their language of study.
