BA Linguistics (2017) alum John Oliver Monghit just began his Ph.D. in East Asian Studies at the Institute for Asian and African Studies at Humboldt University, Germany this October 2022. His doctoral research intends to provide new insights into the sound system of Philippine Hokkien using Spanish missionary sources and fieldwork data. His advisor, Prof. Dr. Henning Klöter, is a renowned German Sinologist and linguist who authored several publications on Hokkien including the monograph “The Language of the Sangleys: A Chinese Vernacular in Missionary Sources of the Seventeenth Century” (2011). Oliver is also the sole Filipino recipient this year of the doctoral research grant from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). This prestigious scholarship covers his living expenses, medical insurance, airfare, and German language studies in Germany.
