Congratulations to Assistant Professor Noah Cruz who is now officially part of the Department’s roster of tenured faculty effective 13 February 2026. 

Asst. Prof. Cruz finished his MA in Linguistics at the Department in 2024. He also earned his BA in Linguistics at the Department. He has been teaching here since 2020 and is primarily interested in ethnolinguistics, metaphor studies, sociolinguistics, and language vitality and endangerment.

His MA Thesis at the Department was entitled “Ang Pagtatasa sa Sigla ng mga Wika at Diyalekto sa Pilipinas: Kalagayan at Patutunguhan.” Among his publications are “A Reexamination of the Functions and Classification of Hiligaynon and Tagalog Numerals”  published on the Philippine Journal of Linguistics, “Malalimang Pagtalakay sa Dalawang Pangunahing Lápit sa Pagtatása sa Sigla ng mga Wika sa Pilipinas” on the Daluyan Journal ng Wikang Filipino, “The Odor Lexica of Philippine Languages” on the International Christian University-Working Papers in Linguistics, and “Metapora sa Panahon ng Pandemya: Ilang Tala Tungkol sa mga Metaporang may Kaugnayan sa COVID-19 Pandemic sa Wikang Filipino” on the Diliman Review. Some of his co-authored works include “Ilang Tampok na Katangian ng Ponolohiya ng Wikang Ayta Magbukun” with Yeddah Joy Piedad. Cruz is also a recipient of the 2025 UP CASAF-PSSR Writing Fellowship and was awarded 3rd place in the 2025 Loretta Makasiar Sicat Awards. Right now, Cruz is working on the 2026 Summer Seminar in Linguistics (SSL) on Language Documentation as its main proponent.
