The Department of Linguistics is pleased to announce that Assistant Professor Ria P. Rafael has officially been granted tenure. The approval of her permanent appointment was signed by the UP President on 27 July 2021.

Rafael obtained her Masters in Language Education and Information Science from Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan and her BA in Linguistics, cum laude, from UP Diliman. Her research interests include language description & documentation, morphosyntax, language varieties & variation, Japanese language education, and foreign language education. She recently published her articles titled, “Revisiting word structure in Tagalog” in Diliman Review and “Sinong pasimuno? Paggamit ng subject at topic sa pag-aaral ng wika” in Daluyan. She is currently finishing her PhD in Linguistics, where she is working on the grammar of Romblomanon for her dissertation.

Rafael serves as an assistant professor of linguistics and Japanese language. She is also the current Japanese cluster leader at the Department as well as the representative of the Department to the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy Research Committee.
