Antes de los Artes y Vocabularios: Some notes on linguistic descent, diversity, and contact in pre-colonial Philippines

This lecture is about the pre-colonial linguistic landscape of the archipelago. It will review the evolutionary pathways of modern-day Philippine languages, the relationships between these languages, and their position in the Austronesian Language family. The presentation will also explore the linguistic ecology of the islands at first contact with the colonizers. The active and robust linguistic interactions amongst the various ethnolinguistic groups of the islands and with groups outside of what is now the Philippines will also be considered.

Gahum sa Buut is a webinar organized by the University of the Philippines through the Department of History as part of the commemoration of the quincentennial of the Philippine phase of the world’s first circumnavigation. The event “seeks to highlight perspectives on the Conquista from the lens of how we, as a people, understand our shared past and advance a holistic and inclusive history of the nation.”

The three-day webinar is free and open to the public. Participants can register through this link or watch the recorded livestream of the talks at the UP Diliman Facebook page.
