Undergraduate students at the Department, Monika Angel, Symon Dela Cruz, Erin Gabayan, and Daniel Ton presented their paper entitled “Tagalog Discourse Markers in the Casual Conversation of Masculine, Feminine, and Mixed-Gender Friendships” at the discussion forum entitled “Filipino Linguistic Changes amid Global Pressures” held last 17 September 2025 both on Zoom and at the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin). The event was jointly hosted by Balikbayan TX, a discussion group on Philippine diaspora topics at UT Austin and SparkLINGG, the volunteer arm of the Department. The paper presented is from the students’ Lingg 125: Mga Pangfild na Metod sa Linggwistiks class.
The event aims to encourage transnational ties and discussions between students from the Philippines, the United States of America, and other countries by critically examining the Filipino language’s historic and ongoing changes, as well as the unique pressures it faces with the rise of globalism and the ubiquity of social media.
