
Several faculty members and graduate students are at Pangasinan State University – Lingayen Campus to present their papers at the 7th Linguistic Society of the Philippines International Conference. The event, with the theme, “Language through the ages, across the regions,” runs from 24 to 26 April.
Assoc. Prof. Aldrin Lee, Asst. Prof. Jay-Ar Igno, and Lecturer Michael Manahan will have a themed panel with the topic, “A Philippine Ethnolinguistic Question.” Next, PhD candidates Honeylet Dumoran and Ryn Jean Fe Gonzales, along with MA candidate Chester Usero will talk about “Comparing language systems: How and why do we do crosslinguistic analysis?” MA student Abee Eijansantos will meanwhile join a panel on Zambangueño Chabacano.
For paper presentations, Inst. and MA student Brian Baran will discuss “Mora ra’g Word: Lexicalization and Functions of Cebuano mora(g),” while Inst. and MA candidate JM De Pano will examine the “Voice and Aspect Inflection in Southern Cordilleran Languages: Paradigms in Pangasinan, Bugkalot/Egongot, and Keley-i.” MA students Katrina Jose and Leo Fordan will present on “Comparative description of pronominal clitic ordering of three West Bisayan languages – Cuyonon, Aklanon, and Kinaray-a” and “Linking Functions of Case Markers in the Sambalic Languages,” respectively. Next, MA student Norodin Undong has a paper on the “Nominal Marking System of Danao Languages.”
Meanwhile, MA student Emil Conde’s topic is on “Anusan Mo: A Sociolinguistic Exploration of Resilience in Pangasinan Language.” PhD student Mark Angeles is also set to present his paper, “A Comparative Study of the Morphophonology in Ifugao, Bontok, and Kalinga Languages.” Finally, MA alum Rodney Jubilado will talk about “Plural, Pluractional and Plurifactive Verbs: Revisiting the Issues in Cebuano Language.”
This year’s LSPIC is ” jointly hosted by the Linguistic Society of the Philippines, the Pangasinan State University (Lingayen Campus), and the Local Government Unit of Lingayen, Pangasinan.” Among the board members of LSP are Immediate Past President Aldrin Lee (University of the Philippines Diliman), Vincent Christopher Santiago (University of the Philippines Diliman), PhD candidate Ryn Jean Fe Gonzales (representing the Summer Institute of Linguistics – Philippines), PhD student Honeylet Dumoran (representing the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology), and MA alum Rodney Jubilado (representing the University of Hawaii at Hilo).
