Assoc. Prof. Maria Kristina Gallego, Assoc. Prof. Jem Javier, Asst. Prof. Noah Cruz, and Instr. Brian Salvador Baran went to Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPU) – Siniloan Campus, Siniloan, Laguna last 23-24 January 2026 to conduct a 2-day language documentation workshop. The event was organized by LSPU’s College of Teacher Education and served as a training-workshop for the project members of their research project to document the Dumagat/Remontado or Hatang Kayi language (ISO 639-3 [agv]) of General Nakar, Quezon. The project is entitled “Dumagat-Remontado of the Sierra Madre: Documentation of the Language and Culture of an Indigenous Ethnic Group.”
The workshop included lectures on introduction to language documentation and its mobilization and planning by Instr. Baran, on language vitality by Asst. Prof. Cruz, on ethics and lexicography by Assoc. Prof. Javier, and on data elicitation and management by Assoc. Prof. Gallego. The event is part of the customized training programs and workshops offered by the Department for academic institutions, local community organizations, cultural agencies, and private companies on topics such as language documentation and linguistic analysis; language, culture, and communication; asian languages; and, foreign language teaching. Similar workshops include the capacity-building workshops for the Dumagat/Remontado community of Antipolo.
