The 2nd Salindunong International Conference on Language and Literature and Ika-15 Pambansang Kumperensiya sa Filipino at Pananaliksik organized by the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) began yesterday,February 22, and will run until February 24.
Among the paper presenters at the joint conference are BA Ling major Brian Salvador Baran, who is presenting his study titled “Sou da ne, mao sa: Comparing the Pragmatic Functions and Semantic Generalizations of Selected Japanese and Cebuano Disjunct Interactional Morphs,” and MA Ling student Abee Eijansantos, who is presenting his paper titled “Morphophonology of Zamboanga Chavacano Pronominal Portmanteau Morphs: Previously Separated, Now Married – A Diachronic Analysis.”
PhD Ling alum, Dr. Danilyn Abingosa, currently an associate professor at the MSU-IIT Department of Filipino, will also be presenting a co-authored paper on the morphophonemic changes in the Kolibugan language. BA Ling alum, Florinda Amparo Palma Gil, currently a senior lecturer at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, will also be presenting her preliminary study analyzing the features of the Filipino language spoken by Japanese students of Filipino descent.
Salindunong 2023 also featured plenary lectures from Associate Professor Dr. Aldrin Lee, who’s talk is titled “Island Linguistics in the Philippines: Some Domains of Inquiry,” and MA Ling alum, Dr. Rodney Jubilado, currently an associate professor and the chairperson of the Department of Languages at the University of Hawai’i at Hilo, who talked about the state of language research in the Philippines. Former visiting research fellow, Dr. Naonori Nagaya, who now chairs the Department of Linguistics at the University of Tokyo, delivered the keynote lecture on the first day of the conference with his paper titled “Usage-based Approaches to Philippine Languages.”
