Asian Language Teaching in the Philippines: The UP Department of Linguistics Experience

Abstract

One hundred years after its foundation, the Department of Linguistics at the University of the Philippines Diliman remains the premier academic institution specializing in Philippine Linguistics. Alongside Philippine Linguistics, the Department is also recognized as an expert in the teaching of the national languages of Asia. It has also been one hundred years since Asian language courses were first offered at the Department. This paper looks into the Asian language program at the Department of Linguistics, from
its inception to its current state. By accessing available university catalogues, department-related documents, and narratives of past and present members of the Department, this paper attempts to (a) trace the development of the Asian language program and consider relevant social contexts tied to it; (b) describe the current state of the program and identify issues confronting the institution; (c) present Department activities and efforts focused on Asian languages and cultures; and (d) discuss opportunities and future directions of the Department in relation to Asian languages.
