Philippine Ethnolinguistics: A Hundred Years of Inquiry

Abstract

This paper attempts to survey a century of ethnolinguistic scholarship in the Philippines alongside the work of the University of the Philippines Department of Linguistics, tracing its intellectual trajectory from early lexical studies to contemporary semantic, diachronic, and interdisciplinary approaches. Revisiting Malicsi’s (1978) critique of the field’s lack of theoretical grounding and distinction from other interdisciplinary language studies, we examine how subsequent works, both published and unpublished, have responded to these concerns and discuss how ethnolinguistics holds potential for articulating local knowledge systems and practices and foregrounding culturally grounded worldviews. In doing so, we highlight how the field offers important contributions to current efforts toward conducting research in the humanities and social sciences in the Philippines.
