Instr. JM De Pano recently shared his reflections both as a foreign language teacher and as a Japanese language student following his completion of the Japan Foundation‘s (JF) Basic Training Program for Teachers of the Japanese Language. His presentation was done online last 27 March 2026 and was hosted by The Japan Foundation, Manila (JFM).

He was joined by fellow trainees Alexis Pulido Atienza of Pantay Integrated School in Batangas and Reb Russell Buendia of the Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School in Davao. Their presentations covered an overview of the 6-month program, their personal goals both as a teacher and as a student, and how they currently apply the program’s theories and practices in their Japanese classes.

Among the members of the audience were public high school teachers taking up the Course on Japan for High School Classroom (CJH) organized by the JFM, and one of the goals of the 27 March event was to encourage Japanese language teachers from different parts of the Philippines to participate in the different training programs in Urawa, Japan.

De Pano’s participation falls in line with the practice of Japanese language teachers at the Department taking up training programs at JF Urawa, with other recent participants being Lecturer Kiko Sunga (2022) and Asst. Prof. Ria Rafael (2023). To know more about the Department’s Japanese language classes, please visit <https://linguistics.upd.edu.ph/programs/undergraduate/plan-c/>.
