Assoc. Prof. Aldrin Lee, Senior Lecturer Sidney Bata, Assoc. Prof. Jem Javier, Asst. Prof. Ria Rafael, Inst. Noah Cruz, and Inst. Vincci Santiago gave different interviews last August-September on linguistics, language education, and Asian cultures.
Lee was interviewed by GMA Network‘s 24 Oras Weekend last 11 August on the supposed “Pinoy accent” when speaking English. He explained that this accent has several varieties, and reveals something about the background and identity of the speaker. The interview ends with Lee’s call for the appreciation of the diverse linguistic profile of the Philippines, which includes the different accents. Bata had two interviews: one for a local channel and another for a foreign newspaper. Dapat Alam Mo!, an online news magazine by GMA Network, aired their episode on 19 August. Meanwhile, Javier, Rafael, and Cruz were featured in OPEN Talk, a podcast and video series hosted by the Center for Open and Digital Teaching and Learning of UP Open University. Their 28 August episode, titled “Mga Wika Natin ‘To: Ang Kalagayan at Hinaharap ng Multilingguwal na Pilipinas,” tackled the multilingual situation in the country and how it affects future language description and planning. Finally, Santiago was the online guest speaker for indie and Original Pilipino Music (OPM) at the IP 360P (Southeast Asian Food, Music, and Rituals) class at the Department of Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures of the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. The class is handled by BA and MA Lingg alum Louward Allen Zubiri, PhD.
