Congratulations to Assistant Professor Jem Javier on getting his PhD in Linguistics!
His doctoral dissertation is titled “Semantik na Gramar ng Filipino,” and it “aims to describe the grammar of Filipino with particular focus on meaning, on the assumption that the meaning of the words that comprise a sentence largely contributes to their syntactic behavior and, consequently, the resultant construction of the sentence.” The study, which was supervised by Dr. Mary Ann G. Bacolod, draws its data from The Filipino Language Corpus, a component of an ongoing collaborative project in UP Diliman. Other members of Dr. Javier’s supervisory panel are Dr. Irma Peneyra, who served as the critic, Dr. Viveca Hernandez, Dr. Aldrin Lee, and Dr. Vicente Villan of the UP Department of History, who served as the Dean’s Representative.
Dr. Javier completed his PhD while he served as the Department’s chairperson (2019-2021), Deputy Director of the UP Diliman Information Office (2014-2018), Member of the UP Diliman COVID-19 Task Force (2020-2021), co-producer of the Tuko Chronicles Podcast of the UP CSSP Folklore Studies Program (2021-present), and member of the editorial team of various academic publications, including The Archive, Social Science Diliman, Philippine Journal of Linguistics, Humanities Diliman, Philippine Social Sciences Review, Asia Pacific Higher Education Journal, Hawai’i Journal of Humanities, Daluyan, and Jati Journal of Southeast Asian Studies. He was also awarded the Gawad Tsanselor para sa Natatanging Mananaliksik sa Filipino in 2021, the One UP Faculty Grant in Linguistics for Outstanding Teaching and Research in UP Diliman (2019-2021), and the One UP Faculty Grant in Linguistics for Outstanding Research and Public Service in UP Diliman (2016-2018), as well as two UP International Publication Awards in 2018 and in 2019. He also received a visiting fellowship at the University of Shizuoka in 2018 and continues to be engaged in major research projects such as UP Monolinggwal na Diksyonaryong Filipino Project and an international collaborative research project headed by the Department of Education at the University of Oxford titled “TalkTogether: Supporting Oral Language Development.”
Taos-pusong pagbati, Dr. Javier! Padayon pero magpahinga ka naman!
