The Archive, the official journal of the UP Department of Linguistics, welcomes the new members of its editorial board. Assoc. Prof. Maria Kristina S. Gallego has started her term as Editor-in-Chief, together with Asst. Prof. (Int’l) Kyung Min Bae as Managing Editor, on 01 August 2025.

Assoc. Prof. Gallego serves as one of the issue editors of Daluyan Journal ng Wikang Filipino Vol. 31 (2025) to be published by the UP Sentro ng Wikang Filipino—Diliman. She also co-edited the book titled, Historical Linguistics 2019: Selected Papers from the 24th International Conference on Historical Linguistics, published by the John Benjamins Publishing Company. Prior to her term as Editor-in-Chief, she edited several issues of The Archive, featuring papers presented during the 15th Philippine Linguistics Congress, which she convened in 2023. Meanwhile, Asst. Prof. Bae has served as Managing Editor of The HanPil (한필) Studies on Korea and the Philippines and the UP KRC Policy Brief, published by the UP Korea Research Center (KRC). She also co-edited the Center’s special publication titled, A glimpse into contemporary Korea.

They will be succeeding Assoc. Prof. Jem R. Javier and Asst. Prof. Divine Angeli P. Endriga, who served as Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor, respectively, from 2021 to 31 July 2025. During their term, the following issues were published:

Regular Issues

Special Publication

Classics

They also spearheaded the completion of the repository as well as the online posting of articles of the previous The Archive issues, beginning with Paper No. 1: On the Boak Tagalog of the Island of Marinduque, first published in 1923. Through this activity, the journal has been instrumental in publicizing and popularizing research on Philippine languages and dialects for the past century.

With the transition, The Archive enters a new phase under the editorial guidance of Dr. Gallego and Dr. Bae, both of whom bring with them extensive experience in linguistic research and publication. Their leadership is expected to strengthen the journal’s commitment to advancing linguistic scholarship, particularly on Philippine languages and dialects. Joining them is Instr. Brian Salvador C. Baran, who serves as the copyeditor and layout artist of the journal. He took over the position from Mr. James Dominic R. Manrique, an alumnus of the bachelor’s degree program of the Department.

The Department extends its deepest gratitude to Dr. Javier and Asst. Prof. Endriga for their service and looks forward to the fresh perspectives and editorial direction that Dr. Gallego and Dr. Bae will bring to the journal.

The Archive was originally published in the 1920s by Otto Johns Scheerer as a repository for working papers of the Department’s graduate students. It now publishes research outputs in three different categories: the Regular Issue, which is the peer-reviewed publication for original works dealing primarily but not exclusively with Philippine languages and dialects; the Special Publication, which is a venue for publishing single, extensive works on Philippine languages, translations, and other similar works; and the Classics series, which reprints monumental works in Philippine linguistics that paved the way for further research in the field and continue to influence current studies on Philippine languages.

The Archive accepts submissions all year round. It is officially hosted by the UP Diliman Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Research and Development, through the UP Diliman Journals Online website, where previous and current issues of the journal may be freely accessed and downloaded. More information about the journal and submission guidelines are available through this link.
