Abstract:

This paper aims to look for possible cross-linguistic influences and identify features, specific areas and structures that are transferable from L1 (Filipino) to L2 (Japanese) using contrastive analysis of the two languages Filipino and Japanese. It will mainly use the principle of transfer to discuss cross-linguistic influences in this study and analyze its role in the development of Filipino students’ Interlanguage and its application to the teaching of Japanese language to Filipino students. It also aims to identify and predict learning difficulties among Filipino students studying Japanese language and give possible explanations as to how and why such difficulties occur by discussing transfer strategies in the students’ Interlanguage. Most of the data analyzed in this paper were taken from survey and analysis of utterances, interactions and essays written by 40 students during class.
