The UP Department of Linguistics is proud to announce the addition of Assistant Professor Elsie Marie T. Or to the roster of the Department’s tenured faculty. Her permanent appointment is effective 01 April 2022.
Or has an MA in Linguistics and a BA in English Studies: Language (magna cum laude), both of which she obtained from UP Diliman. Having been part of the Department for 13 years, she teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in Linguistics, Chinese Mandarin, and English.
Her research interests are focused on morphosyntax, syntax-semantics interface, language documentation, and second language acquisition. She has documented Iraya Mangyan, an endangered language in Oriental Mindoro, and recently published her paper titled “Focus and aspect in Iraya Mangyan verbs” in The Archive journal. She is currently involved in the “Annotating a Tagalog corpus using the Universal Dependencies Framework” project commissioned by the University of Cologne and University of Leipzig through the support of Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. She also currently supervises the archiving and digitization of the Ernesto Constantino Collection comprised of valuable raw data on Philippine languages.
Asst. Prof. Or currently serves as the Department’s Undergraduate Program Coordinator, Academic Assessment and Development Officer, and Chinese Language Cluster Leader. She was instrumental in developing the new Department website, establishing the Linguistics Scholarship and Wellness Fund, and conducting the undergraduate exit survey and alumni tracer study.
