MA and PhD in Lingg students enrolled this semester were welcomed last 19 September (Thursday) at the CSSP Health and Wellness Center. The event (re-) introduced the Department’s areas of study, updated students on the revised academic policies, and served as a venue for the sharing of research interests and possible collaborations.

The “2024 Graduate Students Assembly” opened with students introducing themselves, their languages of study, subfields of interest, and ongoing projects. This was then followed by an orientation led by Department Chair and PhD Program Adviser Assoc. Prof. Kristina Gallego, and MA Program Adviser Assoc. Prof. Jem Javier

Five areas under which the Department conducts its studies, according to the advisers, remain to be some of the guiding principles in the choosing of research topics–from undergraduate students, graduate students, up to the members of the faculty. MA Lingg and PhD in Lingg majors were reminded that their future projects must fall under these categories, and in the case of dissertations, must focus on Philippine languages.

After this, University-, College-, and Department-wide academic policies were reiterated, including the adjustments on the years of residence, absence without leave, and leave of absence. The CSSP Ethics Review Board (CSSP ERB), recently established to ensure humane and ethical research, was also introduced for the students to be informed of the application processes related to the office.

Opportunities within the University, which include publication, scholarships, and other forms of assistance that graduate students may avail of, were also mentioned. Among those cited were “The Archive Journal,” “UP Working Papers in Linguistics,” the UP Linguistics Scholarship & Wellness Grant, the Ernesto H. Cubar Research Grant, and the UP Teaching Assistantship Program (TA/TF)

The event concluded with an open forum and a socialization of the students to share their research interests and explore possible collaborations for the future.
