Graduate Admissions

The graduate programs of the UP Department of Linguistics are open for admissions for the first semester of each academic year.

MA Admission Requirements

The following are the general requirements for admission into a master’s program in UP:

  1. bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution of higher learning with a general weighted average (GWA) of at least 2.5 or its equivalent; and
  2. intellectual capacity and aptitude for advanced studies and research.

In addition, the following admissions requirements for the MA in Linguistics program must be submitted to the College Office of the Graduate Program (or Department) within the graduate admissions period:

  1. application letter addressed to the Dean of the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy;
  2. accomplished Graduate Program Application Form (download link);
  3. curriculum vitae;
  4. official transcript of records of undergraduate work, with at least a 2.5 grade average or its equivalent in the bachelor’s program;
  5. a two (2)-page research plan detailing what the applicant intends to work on for their master’s thesis;
  6. letters of recommendation from three (3) former professors/employers to be sent directly to the Department email: linguistics.upd@up.edu.ph (recommendation form download link)
  7. NSO-issued birth certificate: one (1) original copy and one (1) certified true copy of the original;
  8. two (2) passport-size photographs

Applicants who pass the initial evaluation will be contacted by the Department for an interview. 

PhD Admission Requirements

The following are the general requirements for admission into a doctoral program in UP:

  1. master’s degree, or its equivalent, from a recognized institution of higher learning with a general weighted average (GWA) of at least 1.75 or its equivalent; and
  2. intellectual capacity and aptitude for advanced studies and research.

In addition, the following admissions requirements for the PhD in Linguistics program must be submitted to the College Office of the Graduate Program (or Department) within the graduate admissions period:

  1. application letter addressed to the Dean of the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy;
  2. accomplished Graduate Program Application Form (download here);
  3. curriculum vitae;
  4. official transcript of records of undergraduate work, with at least a 2.5 grade average or its equivalent in the bachelor’s program;
  5. a brief research proposal detailing what the applicant intends to work on for their doctoral dissertation;
  6. letters of recommendation from three (3) former professors/employers to be sent directly to the Department email: linguistics.upd@up.edu.ph (recommendation form download link);
  7. NSO-issued birth certificate: one (1) original copy and one (1) certified true copy of the original; and
  8. two (2) passport-size photographs

International Students

Foreign national applicants must submit the following additional documents:

  1. a photocopy of duly authenticated passport to be attached to the birth certificate; and
  2. for applicants whose native language is not English, a certification of English language proficiency (TOEFL score of 500 or 173 in the computerized form) OR a certification from their institution that the medium of instruction is English.

Applicants who pass the initial evaluation will be contacted by the Department for an interview. 

Payment of Application Fee

Graduate student applicants are required to submit a non-refundable application fee of PHP 100.00 for Filipino citizens and USD 25.00 for foreign nationals to be paid at the designated official bank of the University or in the form of a money order or cashier’s or manager’s check payable to the University of the Philippines.
