Teaching Positions at the UP Department of Linguistics

The UP Department of Linguistics is now accepting applications for full-time and part-time teaching positions for the Academic Year 2023-2024.

Please read the poster for the minimum qualifications and the documentary requirements. Recommendation letters should be sent directly by the recommender via email.

Full-time faculty members are expected to teach graduate and/or undergraduate linguistics courses, participate in committee work, conduct research projects, and render extension services.

Part-time faculty members are designated as “lecturers” and are considered non-regular, temporary members of the Department who are paid on an hourly basis.

Ontologist for AI Startup

A startup, MIND AI (https://www.mind.ai) is working on a brand new paradigm in artificial intelligence. We are looking to innovate REAL AI. Not just natural language processing but natural language reasoning. We need versatile talents who are interested in changing the world. This is not deep learning but something totally new. And we need people with open and creative minds.

We need someone who knows what language is, how meaning is related, and how it works. And
can explain it to human and machine, both in ontological representation. Knowledge of ontology
and epistemology (as per metaphysics) would help greatly.

Specifically, the Ontologist will work on the:

  • Development of domain-specific ontology
  • Development of common-sense ontology
  • Collaborate with other computational linguists to integrate data
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduate degree in information science, linguistics, philosophy or equivalent professional experience
  • Experience using and developing formal ontologies
  • Experience translating business requirements into technical/functional ontology implementation for the engineers
  • Experience deploying ontologies
  • Experience in scripting
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other engineers and linguists
  • Ability to quickly understand and master novel frameworks
  • Minimum 2 years of experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Expertise in building ontologies, taxonomies, and semantic relation frameworks
  • Experience in programming in Python, Perl, or another scripting language
  • Experience in using grammars to interpret novel structures
  • Experience with statistical language modeling
  • Excellent communication, strong organizational skills, and detail oriented
  • Comfortable working in a fast paced, highly collaborative, dynamic work environment
  • Experience with Universal Dependencies & Penn Treebank II Tags
    Familiarity with the 3 the types of logical reasoning (Deductive, Inductive, and Abductive)
CONDITION FOR EMPLOYMENT

Computational Linguist for AI Startup

and machine, both. Natural language parsing and generation. Will interface with lexical parsers.
Knowledge of ontology and epistemology (as per metaphysics) would help greatly.

Specifically, the Computational Linguist will:

  • Provide analysis of natural language sentences to fit into our data model (universal dependencies & Penn Treebank II tags)
  • Measure and analyze the accuracy of the lexical parser
  • Work on scaling, contextualization/disambiguation, further development of knowledge representation
  • Development of common-sense ontology
  • Incorporation of existing knowledge bases (SUMO, YAGO, CYC etc)
  • Coordination with software engineers in implementation
  • Collaborate with other Computational Linguists to integrate data
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s or higher degree in a relevant field (related to linguistics)
  • 2+ years experience in computational linguistics (4+ years experience in related fields), language data processing, semantics, or philosophy of language
  • Experience with language annotation and other forms of data markup
  • Experience working with speech and text language data in multiple languages
  • Fluency in English (second language is a plus – Korean, Japanese, Chinese)
