Atta, Faire

Atta, Faire [azt], also known as Southern Atta, is a Northern Cordilleran language spoken in the municipality of Santo Niño (formerly known as Faire) near Rizal in Cagayan. The language has 300 speakers in 2000 (Wurm, 2000, as cited in Eberhard et al., 2022) and is tagged as threatened (EGIDS 6b) in Ethnologue. Atta, Faire is deemed very similar to languages such as Atta, Pudtol [atp], Agta, Central Cagayan [agt], and Isnag [isd]. It is used at home by adults and some young people, and its speakers also use related languages like Atta, Pamplona [att] and Ibanag [ibg].

Literature on both the Atta, Faire people and language is scarce, as in the case of most Negrito peoples and languages. The Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) archive only has two wordlists elicited from Bullakit (SIL International, 1960-1980) and Calassitan in Santo Niño (Nickell, 1981b), and one from Annip in Rizal (Nickell, 1981a).
