The UP Department of Linguistics under the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy in U.P. Diliman was established in August 28,1922.
The primary aim of the Department since its founding has been the scientific study, preservation and promotion of the Philippine languages through teaching, field research and publication.
It aims to continue developing as a primary center for the study and archiving of the languages and dialects in the Philippines, as well as to to contribute to general and theoretical linguistics based on the study of Philippine languages and dialects. The Department also works to help in identifying and solving language problems in the country, especially in the fields of education and national communication and integration. As a CHED Center of Excellence in Foreign Languages, the Department is also mandated to find ways of improving the teaching of the national languages of Asia according to the needs of the Filipino people.
