Retention Policies
To maintain good academic standing and remain in the BA Linguistics program, students are required to:
- Enroll in at least 15 units each semester
- Enroll in at least 3 units of core courses each semester
- Pass at least a total of 24 units each academic year
- Maintain a departamental cumulative GWA of:
- 1.75 or better in Lingg 110 and Lingg 115 in their first year in the program
- 2.0 or better in other core linguistics courses
- Must not receive 5.0 in any of the core linguistics courses
- Plan B students are required to enroll in at least 3 units of Bahasa Indonesia/Malaysia each semester until they finish all of the Bahasa Indonesia/Malaysia courses
- Plan C students are required to enroll in at least 3 units of their chosen East Asian language specialization until they finish all of the language courses under their program
- Plan B and C students are required to maintain an average of 2.0 or better in their language specialization courses
Students who fail to meet the above requirements will be given probationary status by the Department for one semester.
Students who will be placed on probation must meet the following conditions:
- Enroll in at least 15 units each semester
- Enroll in at least one core linguistics course for the duration of their probationary period
- Pass all academic units registered in each semester that they are in probationary status
- Maintain a departamental cumulative GWA of:
- 1.75 or better in Lingg 110 and Lingg 115 in their first year in the program
- 2.0 or better in other core linguistics courses
- For Plan B and C students, maintain a cumulative average of 2.0 or better in their language specialization courses
- Have no INC, DRP, LOA, 4.0 or 5.0 for the duration of their probationary period
- Other conditions stipulated by the College and the University otherwise not specified
Students on probation who fail to meet the above conditions will be housed in the Department for no more than two semesters. They will be expected to shift or transfer to a new degree program after two semesters.
Dismissal from the program may be waived only upon presentation of supporting documents and a letter of appeal to the Department Chair.
A.Y. 2021-2022 Academic Policies
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the following academic policies are in effect this academic year:
(1) The minimum regular study load of students has been reduced from 15 to 12 units per semester.
(2) The retention grade policies of our programs will not be implemented.
(3) A “No Fail” policy will be implemented this academic year.
